Prototype Testing
Overview
Prototype Tests let you collect feedback on early designs, wireframes, and interactive prototypes directly within Sprig. You can embed prototypes from popular design tools and gather insights on usability, comprehension, and visual design, all without setting up any code. They are ideal for unmoderated usability testing can be distributed through panel management providers like User Interviews, email distribution tools, and even Sprig Long Form Surveys!
Supported Prototype Sources
To apply a prototype to a Sprig Prototype test, simply paste a url into each question to align Sprig survey questions with prototype links.
You can embed prototypes from the following supported source urls:

Features
Prototype Tests support all standard Sprig question types, including Open Text, Rating Scale, Multiple Choice (single- or multi-select), NPS, Matrix, Video or Voice, Text/URL Prompt, and Consent/Legal.
They also include one additional type unique to this study: Recorded Task, which captures participant screen, video, and audio.
Recorded Task
The Recorded Task question type lets you capture a participant’s screen, camera, and microphone as they complete a task within your prototype. This helps identify usability issues and observe where participants click, navigate, and hesitate.
The following capture options are supported:
- Screen, Video, and audio
- Screen and audio
- Screen

Note: Participants must grant permission before recording begins.
Once the participant clicks "Start Task", recording begins. When they select "Mark Complete", recording stops and the study moves to the next question.
Reviewing Recorded Task Responses
When responses are submitted, the responses and recording will flow into the Sprig Study Summary.
Sprig will provide:
- An automatically generated transcript of the users audio (if collected)
- A "Time on Task" ie. the time it took the user to complete the task
- A screen recording of the user (if video was collected) and the screen
- Metrics on how many users completed the task vs. gave up

Recorded Task Responses: Translations and Time on Task
Note: Recorded Tasks are not supported on mobile devices.
Exporting Studies with Recorded Tasks
Exporting via CSV will provide the following information (on top of the standard data exported via CSVs):
- Completed/ Gave Up
- Task Completion Time (ms)
- Transcription of Audio (if captured)
- Screen Recording URL (for viewing or download)
- Video Recording URL (for viewing or download, if captured)
Delivery
Prototype Tests are delivered through a shareable link generated when you launch the study.
You can share this link in multiple ways:
- Embedding it in an email
- Redirecting from an in-product survey
- Enabling the User Interviews integration from the Audience tab to reach target panels in User Interviews
When redirecting a user to a long form survey through an in product survey, you can use the Text/URL question type to embed the long form survey URL, append a userID or email address to the long form survey link, and even screen in product!
Set a Response for the First Question
You can pre-set the response to the first question in your Prototype Test using the r query parameter in the study URL. This works for NPS, Rating Scale, or Multiple Choice (single-select) questions.
Multiple Choice:
For example, you might want to collect data about a newsletter using Multiple Choice Single Select as your first question with the following links:
How would you rate this week's newsletter?
Great Good Meh
The configuration of each link is as follows:
<https://a.sprig.com/><PrototypeLaunchURL>?r=great <https://a.sprig.com/><PrototypeLaunchURL>?r=good <https://a.sprig.com/><PrototypeLaunchURL>?r=meh
Rating Scale or NPS:
For Rating or NPS scales, set r to the numeric value (for example, ?r=2).
Enriching Responses with Custom Metadata
You can append custom query parameters to your Prototype Test URL to capture additional context about each respondent. A link can include up to 25 parameters and a total of 1,000 characters.
Some query parameters have special use cases:
- user_id attaches responses to an existing user in Sprig
- r pre-fills the first response (as described above).
- visitor_id is reserved for internal use at Sprig
Any additional custom parameters you add will only appear under the customMetadata column when you download responses as a CSV file.
Here's an example of a Prototype Test link with several parameters.

Access & Support
With the introduction of Sprig Long Form Surveys, Prototype Tests will be depreciated in 2026 when all existing prototype functionality is embedded within Long Form Surveys. As of October 15, new customers will automatically receive Long-Form Surveys in a limited capacity instead, with Prototype Tests automatically included.
If you would like to use Prototype Tests, contact Sprig Support to have the feature enabled in your workspace.
Note: Existing customers who already have access will continue to see both options available.
